BACA NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Core Values Statement

The Baca National Wildlife Refuge is a national treasure deserving of the highest protection.

It is a vital resource to concerned citizens, farmers, ranchers, students and educators, business persons, artists, spiritual and religious communities, sportsmen, outdoor enthusiasts, and community and conservation groups.

In accord with the Baca National Wildlife Refuge's inherent beauty and ecological value, we believe the following:
The Baca National Wildlife Refuge's watersheds are of paramount value and its aquifers the lifeblood of the land's wildlife and our communities.

The Baca National Wildlife Refuge is a vital resource to a sustainable future for the San Luis Valley's cultural, rural and agricultural communities.

The Baca National Wildlife Refuge is a sanctuary for nationally significant, rare and irreplaceable ecological, cultural and wildlife resources.

The Baca National Wildlife Refuge should be managed for the benefit of the people - all of the people.

Based on these values, we believe that it is a grave mistake to exploit these special lands for the principal benefit of the fossil fuel energy industry. Gas and oil development pose a fundamental threat to the water, wildlife and cultural values of the Baca National Wildlife Refuge and therefore should not be allowed. The Baca National Wildlife Refuge should be protected for the benefit of present and future generations of all Americans.
